Ce matin nous devons nous lever tôt pour visiter les derniers sites de la vallée sacrée autour de Cuzco. C’est d’ailleurs notre dernier jour dans cette ville avant d’embarquer sur le train qui nous mènera au pied du Machu Picchu.
A 8h ce matin, nous sommes debout. Nous allons visiter quatre sites archéologiques aux alentours de Cuzco. Nous devons rentrer vers midi, pour ensuite prendre un colectivo pour Ollantaytambp où allons prendre le train à 16h36 pour aller au Machu Picchu. Nous avons donc un timming serré.
Notre excursion commence par le site de Tombomachay situé à 11 km au nord de Cuzco. Nous y arrivons en quinze minutes. Il s’agit du bain de l’inca, un endroit où sans doute les incas venaient effectuer leur rite sacré autour de l’eau qui s’en écoulait. C’est un endroit paisible où sur le chemin nous rencontrons des Alpagas, petit animal mixte entre le mouton et le Lama. Au fond du site un mur de pierre d’où s’écoule de l’eau. Nous y restons quelques minutes avant de repartir pour le prochain site qui se trouve à 400 mètres : la forteresse rouge de Pukapukara.
Nous y allons à pieds. Nous montons au sommet où la vue y est magnifique. Mais de cette forteresse il ne reste plus grande chose à part des petits murets. On dit que c’était peut-être un poste de défense entre Cuzco et le bain des incas.
Nous descendons ensuite à pieds pour nous diriger vers un autre site à 4 km plus bas : Q’enqo. Quatre kilomètre à pieds, ça use, ça use, 4 km à pieds ça use les souliers…Au début c’est une petite promenade, mais sous la chaleur du soleil nous nous fatiguons vite. Un taxi nous appelle, mais comme nous étions au début de notre descente nous l’avons ignoré. Au bout d’une vingtaine de minute de marche, nous rencontrons de nouveau le taxi qui nous avait interpellés, arrêté sur le côté, nettoyant son véhicule. Cette fois-ci nous cédons à la tentation de nous faire conduire. Nous montons dans le véhicule qui nous arrête que 2 km plus loin je pense. La descente a été rapide du coup en taxi. Q’enqo est un sanctuaire dédié au culte du Puma (dieu de la guerre). En arrivant nous voyons un énorme rocher où est creusée une grotte menant à l’autel des sacrifices des animaux dédié à l’oracle. Pour nous ça reste un petit coin de découverte passant d’une petite porte à l’autre, en passant par d’étroits couloirs. C’est étrange de visiter tout ces sites et d’imaginer toute la vie et les cultes qu’il y avait autour !
Nous quittons ce site pour poursuivre à pieds à 1 km de là, vers le dernier site : Sacsayhuaman. Le site est grand, avec une forteresse inca, des murs un peu partout…mais ce qui attire notre attention c’est ces roches glissantes de toutes les couleurs. Un père et son fils s’amuse à y jouer à la glissante. Le papa monte avec son fils, se place sur la palissade et se laisse glisser en retenant un peu avec ses mains. Ca a l’air amusant, et bien entendu je ne peux m’empêcher d’essayer à mon tour. Je grimpe la glissante roche géante, puis arrivée au sommet mon cœur commence à battre… waw j’ai peur, ça ne me paraissait pas si haut d’en bas ! Maintenant que j’y suis, je prends mon courage à deux mains et m’assoie sur la glissante de roche blanche et ocre. En bas des personnes m’encouragent, alors ça m’aide. C’est bon j’y vais. Ca glisse rapidement mais je me retiens avec mes mains. Ouf, arrivée en bas le papa me rattrape et me voilà saine et sauve ! Je retente l’expérience une deuxième fois puis une troisième, la peur s’est envolée !
Ainsi s’achève la visite de la vallée sacrée, et pour le retour un taxi s’impose pour arriver dans les temps ! A 12h30 nous rentrons dans notre auberge, Carmen n’est pas là. Nous payons un jeune Français qui travaille pour la famille et nous partons pour la ville d’Ollantaytambo qui se trouve à 1h30 de Cuzco. Nous arrivons à temps pour prendre notre train.
16h36, nous embarquons dans le train de la compagnie InkaRail. Les fauteuils sont très confortables et on nous sert une boisson pendant le trajet. Le train démarre et nous accompagne d’une musique douce péruvienne, apaisante, cheminant à travers les montagnes et les rivières, passant sous les tunnels de roche. Nous découvrons les majestueuses montagnes de différentes couleurs, et les cimes enneigées au loin. Le trajet dure 1h40 et mes yeux restent écarquillés pendant presque tout le voyage. Le décor est déjà planté. Nous arrivons à la tombée de la nuit et nous devons nous lever le lendemain matin dès 4h30 pour monter les 1714 marches qui vont nous mener au Machu Picchu…

Step 5: From the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes
This morning we get up early to visit the latest sites around the sacred valley of Cuzco. This is also our last day in the city before boarding the train that will take us to the foot of Machu Picchu.
At 8am this morning we're getting up. We will visit four archaeological sites around Cuzco. We have to go to lunch and then take a colectivo to Ollantaytambo which will take the train at 4:36 pm to go to Machu Picchu. We have a tight timming.
Our tour begins with the site of Tombomachay located at 11 km in the north of Cuzco. We get there in fifteen minutes. This is the bath of the Inca, a place where the Incas had no doubt perform their sacred rite around the water flowing out. It is a peaceful place on the way we meet Alpagas, small mixed animal between the sheep and the Lama. At the bottom of the site there is a stone wall from which water flows. We stay a few minutes before returning to the next site that is at 400 meters away: the red fortress Pukapukara.
We go there by foot. We climb to the top where the view is magnificent. But this fortress there remains great thing by small walls. They say it might be a defensive position between Cuzco and the Inca bath.
We then descend by foot in direction to another site at 4 km below: Q'enqo. Four kilometers on foot, it is so hard, so hard, 4 km walking that wears shoes ... At first it's a short walk, but in the heat of the sun we are quickly tired. A taxi is calling us, but we were at the beginning of our descent we ignored him. After twenty minutes of walking, we meet again the taxi which he was arrested us before, he’s stopping on the side, cleaning his car. This time we give in to the temptation to be driven. We got into the car that stops us 2km away. The descent was rapid shot by taxi. Q'enqo is a shrine dedicated to the worship of Puma (god of war). When we are arriving we are seeing a huge rock which is dug a cave leading to the altar of sacrifice of animals dedicated to the oracle. For us it's still a little bit of discovery from a small door to the other, passing through narrow corridors. It's strange to see all these sites and imagine the life and worship there were around!
We leave this site to continue to walk 1 km away, to the last site: Sacsayhuaman. The site is large, with an Inca fortress walls everywhere ... but what catches our attention is the slippery rocks of a lot of colors. A father and his son are playing with the slippery. The Dad goes up with his son, moves to the fence and let slip holding a little bit with his hands. Sounds like fun, and of course I can not resist to try in my turn. I climb the giant slippery rock, then reached the top and then my heart starts beating... waw I'm afraid, it did not seem so high from the bottom! Now that I am here, I take my courage in both hands and sit on the slippery white and ocher rock. Down people encourage me, so it helps me. It's good I'm going. It slips quickly but I hold my hands. Phew, reached the bottom and the dad catch me and I am safe! I retry the experiment a second time and a third, the fear is gone!
This concludes the tour of the Sacred Valley, and a taxi for the return is required to arrive on time! At 12:30 we return to our hostel, Carmen is not there. We pay a young French guy who works for the family and we go to the town of Ollantaytambo which is 1:30 from Cuzco. We arrive in time to catch our train.
16:36 pm, we board the train company InkaRail. The seats are very comfortable and we were served a drink during the journey. The train starts and accompanies us in a soothing soft Peruvian music, traveling through the mountains and rivers, through tunnels under the rock. We discover the majestic mountains of different colors, and the snowy peaks in the distance. The trip takes 1:40 and my eyes are wide open for most of the trip. The decor is already planted. We arrive at dusk and we must stand up the next morning at 4:30 to climb the 1714 steps that will take us to Machu Picchu...
